If you live in northeast Ohio, consider visiting the Holden Arboretum during their annual holiday gift show and sale, "Gifts from the Heart of Nature," which runs from November 14th until January 3rd. It is a juried show that include only crafts that are locally made and feature natural themes and/ or materials. I am thrilled that my work will be featured in this year's show, along with the work of 28 other talented makers.  Although the first full day of the show is Saturday, things kick off on Friday, November 13th with a preview party. Here is...

I love the idea of being an "artist in action." That's me! This is the 6th year that I have had the pleasure of participating in indigenous gallery's annual artTILE extravaganza in Cincinnati, Ohio. It has been a huge honor for me to have my work shown alongside some of the best handmade tile art in the US. Darrell and I drove down over the weekend and we were truly blown away by the quality and diversity of work. As a featured artist, I spent Saturday at the gallery, demonstrating my sculpting technique, meeting new people, and catching up with some of my Cincinnati friends and family. It was a fantastic weekend.  Throughout the day,...

This is a very special kitchen. I have been holding onto these photos for months, hesitating to post them out of fear that my write up won't do them justice. But the reality is, photos this nice speak for themselves! They need to be shared and now is the time. So without further ado, behold the kitchen of Sue and Ted R: The plant and animal themed tiles are all Emu Tile, naturally (glaze is "leaf green.) The surrounding field tiles and decorative border tiles were made by another fine Ohio tile maker, Seneca Tile (glazes are "celadon," "eggshell," and "evergreen"). Over the stove...

McKay Bricker Gallery, in Kent, Ohio has been very good to me. I am extremely grateful for all that gallery owners Cass and Bob have done to promote my art over the years, so I decided to express my appreciation by making a handmade tile version of their ubiquitous oval shaped Black Squirrel logo. If you live in Northeast Ohio you have almost certainly seen the design. Here in Kent, it seems as though ever other car has one of these bumper stickers: (this is the one on my car!) Bob and Cass had these stickers made to celebrate black squirrels which are numerous in the area, and have become our unofficial...

Oh my goodness, I can hardly believe that May is almost over and I haven't posted this yet. It is a great honor for me to be included in the talented group of tile artists whose work is currently being shown at indigenous gallery in Cincinnati, OH. Fortunately, the show runs through June 15th, so there is still time to check it out! For more information, visit www.indigenouscraft.com

I love the combination of glazes on these four 4"x4" tiles. Clockwise, from top left: 4"x4" Spring Oak in Cinnamon Glaze, 4"x4" Elm in Buckwheat Glaze, 4"x4" Tree of Life in Autumn Glaze, 4"x4" Willow in Northern Lights Glaze. These four glazes play well together and with natural material like stone or wood. On these four tree tiles, they almost create a four- seasons effect, though I am not exactly sure which tile would represent which season. I am planning to use one of these four glazes on my submissions to the upcoming artTILE exhibition at indigenous gallery in Cincinnati. So excited to...

Meet "Hazel Tree Interiors," the newest addition to the list of shops that carry Emu Tile. (60’ mural on the side of the building by Kelly James Tighe) As an UA alum with a lot of love for Akron, Ohio, I had been hoping for years that I would find a venue for my art tiles somewhere in the Rubber City. I can't imagine a better place than Hazel Tree Interiors. Today, I met Karen Starr and Jon Haidet at their beautiful interior design studio / framing shop on the near west side. I felt right at home there and...
